Monsoon Trekking Guide for the Sahyadri Ranges

Monsoons transform Maharashtra into a lush green paradise with hundreds of temporary streams and waterfalls. However, trekking during the rains requires careful preparation and extra precautions.

1. Footwear is Your Lifeline

Never wear old sneakers or flat-soled gym shoes. The rocks in the Sahyadris, especially the basalt rock steps of hill forts, become extremely slippery when wet. Invest in high-ankle trekking shoes with deep lug patterns and rubber grip.

2. Waterproofing Your Gear

Use a high-quality rain cover for your backpack and wrap all your electronics, cash, and spare clothes inside ziplock bags or dry bags. Always carry a lightweight poncho that covers both you and your pack.

3. River Crossing and Stream Safety

Streams in the Sahyadris can swell up within minutes due to heavy rain in the upper catchments. Never attempt to cross a fast-flowing, waist-deep stream without proper guidance and safety ropes.
