Safety First: Navigating Slippery Fort Steps in Maharashtra

Maharashtra is home to some of the most spectacular hill forts in the world, many built during the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The rock-cut steps of these forts are historic marvels but can be intimidating and dangerous if not approached with caution.
Maintain Three Points of Contact
When climbing steep steps like those at Harihar Fort, always maintain three points of contact: two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. Do not rush, and let the person ahead of you complete their section before you start.
Descending Technique
Many accidents occur during descent. When descending steep rock-cut steps, it is often safer to face the rock face (climbing down backwards) or sit down and slide side-to-side, using your hands for support.
Hydration and Heat exhaustion
The humidity in the Sahyadris can cause rapid dehydration even on cloudy days. Drink plenty of water with ORS or glucose, and wear sun protection.
